Accessibility
This page is aimed at young children and the adults reading with them, some of whom will be using a screen reader, a keyboard, a magnifier, or a phone in one hand while holding a book in the other. We have built for that, and we will fix what we have missed.
The one that matters most
Nothing here requires tapping, speaking, reading aloud or performing. Tap. Tap. Pause. is never compulsory. A child can take one breath, put their own hands together, touch the table, hold a pause card or use any cue you agree between you. There is a button on the activity that switches to exactly that. Either wrist is fine, and the place has no special effect.
Every question can be answered by pointing, signing, drawing, answering through an adult, or passing. Nothing is scored and nobody is compared with anybody.
What we have built in
- Standard aimed at: WCAG 2.1 level AA.
- Keyboard: every control is reachable and operable by keyboard, in a sensible order, with a visible focus ring that does not rely on colour alone.
- Screen readers: real headings, real buttons, real form labels. Each step of Ten Minutes in Silverton is announced as it changes.
- Contrast: text and interface colours meet AA. We never put white text on our yellow or cyan, which is a rule our brand guide sets for exactly this reason.
- Targets: every button and link is at least 44 by 44 pixels.
- Zoom and reflow: the page works at 200% zoom and down to a 320-pixel-wide screen without sideways scrolling.
- Motion: the only animation is the breathing circle, and it stops entirely if your device is set to reduce motion.
- No time limits. Nothing expires, times out or moves on without you.
- Without JavaScript: the pledge, the routine, the form, the printable and all the words still work. Only the Ten Minutes activity needs scripting, and the same content is in the printable instead.
- Print: the free activity has a low-ink version, because not every setting has a colour printer or wants to use it.
What is not right yet
- The free activity is available as a printable web page rather than a tagged, screen-reader-optimised PDF. If you need it in another format, ask and we will make one.
- The story text is written for reading aloud with an adult and has not been checked against a formal readability measure for independent reading.
- We have not yet tested with a panel of disabled users. Automated and manual testing is not the same thing as that, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
