Mr Mean's old dog slept in a bucket at the car wash. His favourite complaint was a bubble floating past.
He growls at bubbles.
His chew toy no longer squeaked, so he had started borrowing Louis's work sponges. Louis would quite like them back.
Ava had three coins, saved for a bag of sherbet twists. On Budget Bend she saw a green dog toy for two coins. It squeaked beautifully.
He growls at bubbles.
The dog was still asleep. Nobody had asked Ava to buy him anything.
Three coins could buy her sweets. Two could buy the toy, leaving one. Or all three could stay on her band.
Ava pictured the old dog waking up to a squeak. Then she pictured her sweets. The choice was hers, and keeping her coins was a choice too.
