Ava counted pigeons outside the bakery on Budget Bend. Louis counted eleven. Ava thought two were the same pigeon moving very fast.
It had been a long, rainy week. Ava had one coin left.
The bakery sold a bag of bird seed for one coin and a bag of sweets for one coin.
One coin. Two bags.
Ava imagined all the pigeons gathering for seed. She liked the sweets too: one now and one after tea.
Mum said she could take her time. Both bags would still be there in a minute.
One coin. Two bags.
Neither bag was the wrong choice. Ava could also keep her coin.
The pigeons carried on being pigeons while she thought. Whether there were ten or eleven was still a lively discussion.
