An enormous sign in the shoe-shop window said FASTER LACES. MAKES YOU FASTER. At the end was a tiny star.
‘What is the star for?’ Louis asked.

The laces cost six coins. Ava had exactly six. She imagined flying round the track.
The shopkeeper showed them the small print: LACES DO NOT CONTAIN ANY ACTUAL SPEED.
The big words and the little words were telling rather different stories.
‘But the fast bit is HUGE,’ said Ava.

Zion thought they were the fast laces. Louis wanted to know what they actually did.
Ava looked from the shiny laces to the tiny writing. Six coins could buy laces. Whether they could buy speed was another question. She had something important to check before choosing.
